New Parkinson’s Steppers Movement Class Launches in West Yorkshire This June

Welcome to Yorkshire

Published on May 26th, 2026

A new movement and wellbeing class named Parkinson’s Steppers is set to launch in West Yorkshire this June, specifically designed for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease and their carers. Developed by Harmony in Motion, a creative organisation based at Stage@Leeds, this initiative aims to help participants explore movement in a fun and supportive environment.

What Is Parkinson’s Steppers?

Parkinson’s Steppers is an innovative programme that combines movement and sound in unique ways. The sessions will kick off on Friday, 19 June, running from 1.30pm to 3pm for six consecutive weeks at the Clothworkers South Building, University of Leeds, LS2 9JT. Participants are encouraged to pre-book, with a total cost of £30 for the block booking.

This initiative stands out as the first of its kind in the UK, aiming to provide a creative outlet for those affected by Parkinson’s. Louise McDowall and Rosemary Spencer, the Creative Directors at Harmony in Motion, expressed their enthusiasm, stating, “We are very excited to be bringing this new initiative to Parkinson’s communities. We have really enjoyed developing this practice and can’t wait to share it.”

Movement and Sound Exploration

The classes will delve into the relationship between movement and sound, using ground-breaking wearable technology that produces sounds as participants move. This approach not only makes the experience engaging but also allows individuals to express themselves creatively. Through group activities, participants will discover meaningful ways to move and create sound together.

No prior experience in movement or dance is necessary, making it accessible for everyone. Friendly and experienced instructors will guide participants on how to use the technology effectively, ensuring that each session remains active and enjoyable.

Benefits of Physical Activity for Parkinson’s

Engaging in physical activity is known to have numerous benefits for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease. Here are some of the positive effects that participants may experience:

  • Improved balance and coordination: Helps prevent falls and promotes stability.

  • Better strength, flexibility, and mobility: Enhances overall physical ability and movement.

  • Improved sense of wellbeing and mindfulness: Encourages a positive mental attitude.

  • Better memory and cognitive skills: Supports brain health and function.

  • Greater social interaction: Fosters connections with others in the community.

  • Improved speech and communication skills: Aids in expressing thoughts and feelings.

Feedback and Future Sessions

The Parkinson’s Steppers sessions are part of a new six-week pilot programme, and participants will be encouraged to provide feedback. This input will be crucial in shaping the future of the programme, ensuring it meets the needs of those it aims to support.
