Welcome to Yorkshire

Published on May 27th, 2026

Exciting changes are on the horizon for families in the Wakefield district as three local parks in Osset, Stanley, and Knottingley prepare to receive significant upgrades this summer. With an impressive investment of £3.5 million from Wakefield Council, these improvements aim to enhance outdoor play areas, making them more fun and accessible for children of all ages and abilities.

Baker Lane, Stanley

The upgrades at Baker Lane in Stanley are set to be completed by 12 June 2026, with a budget of £99,000 allocated for the project. This play area will be transformed to cater to children aged 1 to 14, featuring a variety of new play equipment. Some highlights of the upgrades include:

  • New toddler and junior play units

  • Interactive panels to stimulate play and learning

  • Upgraded surfacing, fencing, and gates for safety

  • Inclusive features such as sensory panels, British Sign Language (BSL) signage, low-level access, and a nest swing for shared enjoyment

These enhancements are designed to ensure that all children can play together, regardless of their abilities.

Church Street, Ossett

Starting on 15 June 2026, Church Street in Ossett will begin its own transformation with another £99,000 investment. This park is set to introduce new accessible play equipment, ensuring that everyone can join in on the fun. The planned features include:

  • A wheelchair-friendly roundabout

  • An in-ground trampoline for added excitement

  • A rope swing for a classic playground experience

  • Improved seating areas, bins, and picnic tables for families to enjoy

These upgrades aim to create a welcoming environment for families to relax and enjoy quality time together.

Acacia Walk, Knottingley

Finally, Acacia Walk in Knottingley will see its improvements completed by 26 June 2026, with £97,000 earmarked for new equipment and features. The enhancements will include:

  • New multi-play units and swings to offer varied play experiences

  • Accessible equipment, including a side transferable springie, ensuring fun for all

  • Refurbished benches and the addition of a new bin to maintain cleanliness

These changes are expected to make the park a more enjoyable space for children and families alike.

Community Benefits

Wakefield Council's Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services, Cllr Julian Carter, expressed enthusiasm about the projects:

“Improving play facilities in our parks and open spaces across the district is one of our top priorities. These play areas will be fun spaces where children of all abilities can play, explore and spend time together.”

The investment in these play areas is part of a broader effort to promote healthier and happier lifestyles for local families. Each park will offer something unique, with play equipment thoughtfully designed for different age groups. This means that whether a child is just starting to walk or is a bit older and looking for more adventurous play, there will be something tailored just for them.

Looking Ahead

Families in the Wakefield district can look forward to enjoying these improved outdoor spaces soon. The enhancements not only aim to make play more enjoyable but also to encourage children to engage in physical activity and social interaction in a safe environment. With the completion dates approaching, excitement is building for the new facilities and the opportunities they will provide for community bonding and active play.
