Wakefield District Prepares for National Young Traders Competition in May 2026

Welcome to Yorkshire

Published on May 14th, 2026

The Wakefield district is set to buzz with excitement as the National Young Traders competition returns, inviting local residents to explore a vibrant mix of stalls showcasing the talents of young entrepreneurs. This year's Young Traders Market will take place across various locations in the district, providing a fantastic opportunity for shoppers to support budding traders while discovering unique, locally-made products.

Markets Across Wakefield

The Young Traders Market events will be held at three key locations, each offering a chance for young traders aged 16 to 30 to display their goods. The dates and venues are as follows:

  • Castleford Indoor Market – Saturday 16 May 2026

  • Wakefield Outdoor Market – Wednesday 20 May 2026

  • Ossett Outdoor Market – Saturday 4 July 2026

These markets not only provide a platform for young entrepreneurs but also add a lively atmosphere to the town centres, making them a great destination for families and shoppers looking for something special.

Supporting Young Talent

Mark Lynam, Wakefield Council’s Corporate Director for Regeneration and Economic Growth, expressed enthusiasm for the event, stating, “The Young Traders Market brings a real buzz to our town centres and is a great way for residents to discover something new while supporting young and local talent.” The markets aim to celebrate the creativity and innovation of the district's youth, offering them a chance to shine.

Last year, the local business Chilli Charva emerged as a standout success, winning both the regional and national finals of the competition, which showcased the potential of traders from Wakefield. This serves as an inspiring example for this year’s participants, highlighting the opportunities available through the competition.

How It Works

The Young Traders Market serves as the first stage of a national competition organised in partnership with the National Market Traders Federation (NMTF). During each event, a panel of judges will select one winner who will represent Wakefield at the regional final in Barnsley on Saturday 1 August 2026. The ultimate goal for these traders is to progress to the national final, which will take place in Stratford-upon-Avon.

This competition is not just about winning; it's also about gaining valuable experience in running a business and learning how to engage with customers. Young traders will have the chance to develop their entrepreneurial skills in a supportive environment, making this a valuable experience for all involved.

Get Involved

For those interested in participating, the application process for the Castleford and Wakefield events has now closed. However, there is still an opportunity for aspiring traders to apply for the Ossett Young Traders Market, with applications open until 31 May 2026. Interested individuals can request an application pack by emailing letstalkmarkets@wakefield.gov.uk with the subject line “YTM EVENT.”

These markets are a wonderful way for the community to come together, support local talent, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere that young traders bring. Whether it’s handmade crafts, delicious food, or unique gifts, there is something for everyone to discover.

Looking Ahead

The return of the Young Traders Market is a significant event for the Wakefield district, showcasing the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of young people in the area. It highlights the importance of supporting local businesses and the positive impact they can have on the community. As shoppers visit the markets, they not only find unique products but also contribute to the growth of future entrepreneurs.

With the first event just around the corner, excitement is building. Residents are encouraged to mark their calendars and come out to support the young traders. This event promises to be a celebration of local talent, creativity, and community spirit, making it a must-visit for anyone in the Wakefield district.
