Dino Week is returning to Wakefield Exchange (WX), promising a week packed with fun and adventure for families during the May half-term. From Saturday 23 May to Sunday 31 May 2026, visitors can dive into a world of dinosaurs with a variety of free activities designed for children of all ages.

Dino Week Activities

Throughout the week, families can enjoy a fantastic range of dinosaur-themed activities. Younger children can explore a dinosaur sand pit, get creative with colouring, and take part in themed play. For those looking for a bit of excitement, there’s a miniature jeep safari where kids can zoom around and have a blast.

Older children aren't left out either. They can step into the past with a thrilling virtual reality (VR) experience called Dino Trek, which lets them come face-to-face with the giant creatures that once roamed the Earth. There’s also a playful option for younger visitors with the Dino Rollercoaster VR experience, ensuring that everyone gets a taste of prehistoric adventure.

Special Events Throughout the Week

Dino Week is not just about the daily activities; it also features a packed programme of special events. On the very first day, Saturday 23 May, there will be a sensory-friendly Dino Slime drop-in workshop. Children aged five and over can create their own dinosaur-themed slime, complete with fun footprints and shapes. This workshop is SEND-friendly, making it accessible for all children.

For families who love movies, the Dino Film Club will run throughout the week, screening beloved dinosaur and prehistoric classics. Films like The Land Before Time, The Good Dinosaur, The Flintstones, and Ice Age will bring smiles and laughter to all ages.

On Wednesday 27 May, families can get active with a fun Pilates session called Stretch it Like T Rex. This playful class is designed for kids, but parents are encouraged to join in as well. The session is free, but advance booking is required to secure a spot.

Dino Quiz and Disco

Thursday 28 May is the day for dino enthusiasts to showcase their knowledge at the Roawsome Dino Quiz. Starting at 6:30 PM and running until 8:00 PM, this family-friendly quiz will be hosted by WX’s resident dinosaur expert. A cuddly dinosaur will be awarded to the winning team, making it a fun evening for all participants.

The excitement of Dino Week culminates in a high-energy Dino Disco Day on Friday 29 May. There will be two sessions: one for Little Dinos (ages 1–5) from 10 AM to 12 PM, and another for Big Dinos (ages 5–11) from 2 PM to 4 PM. Families can join in the fun regardless of age. The celebrations continue on Saturday 30 May with free face painting, allowing children to transform into their favourite dinosaurs.

A Message from Wakefield Council

Mark Lynam, Wakefield Council’s Corporate Director for Regeneration, Environment and Economic Growth, emphasised the importance of free activities for families during the school holidays:

“We know that families are always looking for fun, free things to do during the school holidays so why not come along to WX? There’s going to be lots of different dinosaur-themed events and activities to get involved in throughout the week and there really is something for all ages to enjoy.”

Why Attend Dino Week?

Dino Week at WX offers a full week of imagination, creativity, and prehistoric adventure, making it a must-visit destination for families this May half-term. With all activities being free, it’s an excellent opportunity for families to bond while exploring the fascinating world of dinosaurs without breaking the bank.

For those interested in joining the fun, more information can be found at the official Dino Week page. This event is sure to bring joy and excitement to many families in Wakefield and beyond.
