Welcome to Yorkshire
History • June 7th, 2026
|Rising above the banks of the River Rye, the old mill is one of Yorkshire’s most striking survivors of its rural industrial past. Set in the village of Nunnington on the southern edge of the North York Moors, though silent today, it remains a powerful reminder of a bygone age when water-powered industry shaped the rhythms of rural life.

The history of the site stretches back to the Domesday Survey of 1086, where the mill was recorded as being worth 3 shillings. Since that time, it descended with the manor itself, reflecting the close relationship between landownership and agricultural production in medieval England. Built during the mid to late 18th century and enlarged or partly rebuilt in the 19th century, the four-storey, five-bay building is constructed from dressed limestone with carefully tooled quoins, intended to withstand constant movement and moisture. The lower storeys are formed from heavily rusticated stone, while the upper levels are built in finer ashlar masonry, suggesting later rebuilding or expansion.
The mill is built in a bridge-like planform, spanning the flow of water below. At ground-floor level, a great wheel arch with rusticated voussoirs frames the position of the waterwheel, once the driving force of the machinery inside. The surviving wheel, approximately fifteen feet in diameter, still retains its cast-iron frame, wooden paddles, and spokes, offering a rare glimpse into past milling technology.
Inside, much of the machinery survives despite partial dismantling. Three pairs of under-driven millstones once operated on the stone floor, powered through a complex arrangement of pit-wheels, wallowers, gears, and pulleys. Though boarded over today, the mechanism reveals the remarkable ingenuity of traditional water-powered engineering. The mill continued working until around 1960 before being converted into grain storage.
