Dex’s Story: A Journey of Transformation
Dex’s experience exemplifies the impact of Whirlow Hall Farm Trust. At 14, Dex struggled with school, identity, and mental health. The Whirlow LIFE (Learning In a Farming Environment) programs offered Dex a safe space and supportive environment. Dex found solace in working with animals and particularly enjoyed lambing season. This experience inspired Dex to pursue a Level Two Technical Diploma in Animal Care at Bishop Burton College, leading to potential careers in fields like Animal Science, Zoology, and even Law.
Dex’s journey continued with ongoing support from Whirlow staff, who provided encouragement and a sense of community. Now 18, Dex enjoys countryside walks and visiting the animals at Whirlow, describing the farm as feeling like home.
About Whirlow Hall Farm Trust
Whirlow Hall Farm Trust is an educational and environmental charity based on a working farm in Sheffield. The Trust aims to reduce anxieties for children and young people who experience complex disadvantages and acute trauma. Through the Whirlow LIFE programs, they offer alternative educational provisions focused on progression and re-engagement with education for children with complex needs.
Outcomes and Impact
Whirlow Hall Farm Trust boasts impressive outcomes, with 85% of participants showing reduced anxiety within 12 weeks, and 95% within six months. Success varies for each individual, from returning to school to gaining qualifications for further education. The Trust’s post-16 provision shows a 96% retention rate and significant improvements in mental and social wellbeing for young adults with learning disabilities.
