Robin Hood’s Bay Named Among UK’s Cleanest Beaches in New Litter Study

Welcome to Yorkshire

Published on June 1st, 2026

Robin Hood’s Bay has been recognised as one of the cleanest beaches in the UK in a new study examining litter complaints at seaside destinations across the country.

The North Yorkshire coastal spot ranked fourth in the national list compiled by waste management experts at BusinessWaste.co.uk, with just one Tripadvisor review mentioning litter out of 702 reviews analysed.

The findings come as beaches across the UK prepare for another busy summer season following record-breaking temperatures in May, which saw thousands flock to the coast. While increased visitor numbers often bring growing concerns around litter and environmental damage, Robin Hood’s Bay stood out as one of the country’s best-kept seaside locations.

One of England’s Best Kept Beaches

Only three beaches in the entire UK recorded zero litter complaints in the study — Whitesands Bay in Wales, Whiterocks Beach in Northern Ireland, and Tyrella Beach in County Down. Robin Hood’s Bay followed closely behind, making it one of the cleanest beaches in England.

The report analysed the proportion of Tripadvisor reviews mentioning litter and used a statistical ranking system designed to balance both the number of complaints and the total volume of reviews.

Another Yorkshire beach also featured strongly in the cleanest rankings, with North Landing Beach in East Yorkshire placing fifth nationally.

Concerns Grow Over Beach Litter

In contrast, some of the UK’s busiest seaside destinations struggled with significant litter concerns. Skegness Beach was named the UK’s most littered beach for the second consecutive year, while Scarborough Beach also appeared in the national top 10 most littered beaches, with 108 reviews mentioning rubbish.

Mark Hall, plastic waste expert at BusinessWaste.co.uk, warned that litter remains a growing environmental issue for the UK coastline.

“Litter on the UK’s beaches turns our natural beauty spots into an eyesore and poses a huge environmental threat to marine life.”

“Beachgoers must take responsibility for the impact of their visit. You should always bin any litter or take it home with you if this isn’t possible.”

Protecting Robin Hood’s Bay for the Future

Robin Hood’s Bay has long been one of Yorkshire’s most picturesque seaside villages, attracting visitors with its dramatic cliffs, winding cobbled streets and fossil-rich shoreline. The latest findings suggest the village’s beach is also one of the country’s cleanest and best cared for.

As visitor numbers rise throughout the summer holidays, local residents, businesses and visitors alike will be hoping Robin Hood’s Bay can maintain its reputation as one of the UK’s cleanest coastal destinations.
