Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority Celebrates Apprenticeship Successes in 2023

Welcome to Yorkshire

Published on May 8th, 2026

In the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, four young people are celebrating big career milestones after completing their apprenticeships with the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority. These apprenticeships are not just jobs; they are stepping stones to exciting full-time roles in areas like rangers, communications, and IT. This success story highlights how valuable apprenticeships can be for young people in rural areas where job opportunities might be limited.

Success Stories of Local Apprentices

Among the recent success stories are Alfie Baines and Benedict Parkin, who both completed the Countryside Worker apprenticeship. They have now taken on roles as Access Rangers, with Alfie stationed in Orton and Benedict in Hawes. These apprenticeships, part of the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust’s Rural Apprenticeship scheme, equip young individuals with practical skills that are essential for working in the countryside. Skills learned include:

  • Chainsaw and brushcutter use

  • All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) driving

  • Habitat surveying

  • Species identification

This hands-on experience not only helps these young people build their resumes but also fosters a deeper connection to the stunning landscapes they work in.

Expanding Career Paths

In addition to Alfie and Benedict, Tabitha McNicholas and Jim Ingham have also made significant strides in their careers. Tabitha completed a National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) Journalism Apprenticeship through Darlington College. She now contributes to the Authority's Communications Team, using her skills to share stories about the Dales and engage with the community. Meanwhile, Jim found his niche in technology, securing a full-time position as an IT Support Officer after finishing his Business Administration Apprenticeship through Craven College.

Commitment to Future Apprenticeships

The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority is not stopping here. They are dedicated to providing more apprenticeship opportunities in the near future. Upcoming roles include a Multi-Channel Marketer position and additional rural apprenticeships in collaboration with the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust. This commitment is crucial, especially in an area where job opportunities can sometimes be scarce.

Supporting Young Talent

Julie Hutton, who is the Member Champion for Corporate Management at the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, expressed pride in the programme's success. She stated,

“We have a strong track record of developing young talent within the National Park, with former apprentices now well established across our ranger, land management and communications teams. It brings the total number of apprenticeships offered by this Authority over the last five years to more than 25.”

“In an area where opportunities for young people can be limited, offering high-quality apprenticeships is essential to helping local people begin their careers, grow in confidence and build long-term futures within the rural economy.”

The success of these four apprentices illustrates how valuable practical training can be in building a fulfilling career. With the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority's ongoing commitment to supporting young talent, many more opportunities are likely to arise. This initiative not only benefits the apprentices themselves but also enriches the community as a whole, ensuring that the Yorkshire Dales remains a vibrant and thriving area.
