First Birthday For Critically Endangered Amur Leopard Cub at Yorkshire Wildlife Park

in Doncaster

A critically endangered Amur Leopard cub, Auckley, has reached a significant milestone as she celebrated her first birthday at the award-winning Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster. The playful cub, born last June, is the only surviving Amur Leopard cub of her species born in Europe in 2023, making her birthday a particularly momentous occasion.

A Celebratory Feast

Auckley celebrated by tearing into her presents and enjoying a special meaty treat. Her mother, Kristen, who was introduced to father Drake last year as part of an international breeding programme, watched over the festivities and even joined in the fun.

Auckley’s birth is a beacon of hope for the critically endangered species, with less than 100 individuals remaining in the wild.

Significance of Auckley’s Birth

Dr. Charlotte McDonald, Animal Director at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, expressed the importance of Auckley’s milestone.

“We’re so pleased to celebrate Auckley’s first birthday. She continues to be an inspirational symbol for the park and the team. She is really thriving. This is a real milestone,”

Dr. McDonald said. The birth of Auckley, a rare female cub, has provided a significant boost to the European breeding programme for Amur Leopards.

Conservation Efforts and Future Hopes

The Yorkshire Wildlife Park plays a crucial role in global conservation efforts for the Amur Leopard, one of the rarest species on the planet. Dr. McDonald added,

“Amur Leopards are a beautiful and wonderful species and one of the rarest on the planet and the team takes immense pride in the important role that it plays in global conservation efforts.”

The ultimate goal of the breeding programme is to reintroduce Amur Leopards back into protected areas of their native habitats in Russia. Yorkshire Wildlife Park and its associated charity, the WildLife Foundation, hope to be a part of these efforts to boost the wild population.

Improving Prospects

Despite being driven to the brink of extinction by poaching and habitat loss, global conservation efforts are starting to improve the prospects for Amur Leopards.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park has had previous breeding successes, with two cubs born in 2015 who have gone on to play important roles in breeding programmes in the US and France.

A Visitor Favorite

Auckley has quickly become a favorite among visitors at the park, living in Leopard Heights, a purpose-built breeding complex and the largest Amur Leopard reserve in Europe.

Dr. McDonald commented on Auckley’s rapid growth,

“It is fantastic that our visitors now have a chance to see the beautiful Auckley develop into a strong adult. She is growing up so fast.”

Yorkshire Wildlife Park Experience

Yorkshire Wildlife Park, the UK’s number one wildlife walkthrough experience, offers visitors the unique opportunity to come almost face-to-face with some of the world’s most beautiful and at-risk species, including Polar Bears, Amur Tigers, Black Rhinos, and Sea Lions.

The park’s dedication to conservation and education continues to inspire and engage visitors from around the world.
