Ruby Trueman's Journey of Hope with Assistance Dog Hope in Saltaire

Welcome to Yorkshire

Published on June 4th, 2026

A remarkable story of hope and inspiration has emerged from Saltaire, Bradford, where 23-year-old Ruby Trueman has found new confidence and ambition thanks to her assistance dog, Hope. Diagnosed with Friedrich’s Ataxia, a rare neurodegenerative disorder that affects her movement and coordination, Ruby has faced significant challenges. However, with the support of her specially trained chocolate Labrador, she is now looking towards a bright future, including pursuing a Master’s degree.

Ruby and Hope’s Journey

Ruby’s condition, which she only became aware of at the age of 16, has made day-to-day activities increasingly difficult. Friedrich’s Ataxia primarily impacts the nervous system, leading to problems with balance and coordination. As a result, Ruby uses a mobility walker and is expected to require a wheelchair full-time in the future. Despite these obstacles, Ruby’s spirit remains unbroken. Hope, her four-year-old Labrador, has been trained by the charity Support Dogs to assist Ruby with various tasks. This training has greatly improved her quality of life by enabling her to live more independently. Some of the specific tasks Hope can perform include:
  • Picking up dropped items
  • Opening doors
  • Fetching help if Ruby falls
  • Assisting Ruby in undressing
These skills are particularly vital as Ruby’s condition progresses, making everyday tasks more challenging.

A New Chapter in Education

With Hope by her side, Ruby has gained the confidence to apply for a Master’s degree in Clinical Animal Behaviour at the University of Lincoln. This step marks a significant turning point in her life, as she had previously been out of work and study. Ruby expressed her excitement regarding this opportunity, stating, “I’m really excited for the doors that Hope’s training could open for me.” Ruby’s background in animal husbandry and welfare, complemented by her experience as a dog walker and veterinary receptionist, has shaped her aspiration to help others with disabilities through the power of dogs. She hopes to work in behaviour and welfare, providing assistance similar to what Support Dogs has given her.

The Impact of Support Dogs

Support Dogs, based in Sheffield, trains and provides assistance dogs to help individuals with autism, epilepsy, and physical disabilities. Ruby’s partnership with Hope is a testament to the positive impact of this charity. Ruby shared her appreciation for the organisation, saying, “Support Dogs has been amazing in terms of helping myself and Hope and all the work they do is really great.” Ruby initially applied to Support Dogs in 2022, and while her journey took longer than average due to her changing needs, the staff remained supportive throughout the process. “No one ever gave up on us, which is really, really nice and really appreciated,” she remarked.

Looking Ahead

As Ruby prepares for this next chapter, she is also planning to move out of her family home to live independently for the first time. This significant life change is made possible because of the assistance Hope provides. Ruby reflected on this transition, saying, “Having Hope trained makes me feel more confident in many ways and hopeful for my future.” The support and companionship that Hope offers not only enhance Ruby’s independence but also inspire her to help others facing similar challenges. With her determination and the support of Hope and Support Dogs, Ruby’s future is indeed looking bright. The story of Ruby and Hope serves as a powerful reminder of the difference that assistance dogs can make in the lives of individuals facing disabilities. As Ruby embarks on her journey in higher education, she carries with her the hope and inspiration that comes from a loving partnership with her canine companion.
