Introducing Champing

A Unique Overnight Experience

Champing, coined by the Churches Conservation Trust, allows visitors to camp inside historic churches, providing a distinctive way to engage with these remarkable buildings. Available from March to October, the rates are £49 per adult per night during weekdays and £59 per adult per night from Friday to Sunday. This initiative not only supports the preservation of these historic sites but also offers an unforgettable experience for campers.

St Mary Magdalene Church went live with Champing this year and quickly attracted bookings. The church has already welcomed its fifth set of visitors and has three more groups booked. The facilities provided include camp beds, a modern kitchen, and a comfortable sitting area, ensuring a pleasant stay for all guests.

A Perfect Destination for Nature Enthusiasts

Explore the Marshlands and Nature Reserves

Whitgift’s location makes it an ideal spot for walkers and cyclists. The Marshlands Trail and the RSPB nature reserve at Blacktoft Sands are nearby, offering plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities and wildlife spotting. Additionally, visitors can enjoy the hospitality of a local pub that serves good food, adding to the charm of the Champing experience.

Supporting Historic Churches

Keeping Churches Open and Accessible

The Churches Conservation Trust promotes Champing as a way to keep historic churches open and accessible to the public. By offering these unique camping experiences, the Trust aims to generate revenue that contributes to the maintenance and preservation of these important heritage sites. Champing not only brings people closer to history but also plays a crucial role in ensuring that these churches remain part of the community for years to come.
