New Store Offers Artisan Baked Goods

The new Cooplands Bakery will employ up to 10 local staff, providing job opportunities and helping to boost the local economy. Customers can look forward to a delightful selection of freshly baked goods. The menu includes:

  • Freshly baked bread

  • Savoury favourites like sausage rolls made from Cooplands’ secret recipe sausage meat

  • Handcrafted sweet treats, including the popular Vanilla Slice, Toffee Danish, and Summer Fruit Flan

All these products are baked in Cooplands’ own bakeries located in Scarborough and Durham, ensuring quality and freshness in every bite.

Community Celebrations and Promotions

To celebrate the grand opening, Cooplands went the extra mile by handing out goodie bags to customers. The bakery also hosted a tea party at the Armthorpe Community Centre, inviting locals to join in the festivities. During the first four weeks of trading, special promotional offers will be available in-store, including discounts through a Saver Card on popular items like:

  • Sausage Breakfast Sandwiches

  • Coffee

  • Caramel Crispies

  • Pizza

These promotions aim to attract new customers and encourage them to experience the variety of delicious offerings at the new location.

A Return to Roots

This opening is particularly significant for Cooplands as it marks their first store in the Doncaster area, following a recent management buy-in in October 2025. The new leadership team is dedicated to restoring Cooplands to its roots as a modern local bakery, committed to providing great food at fair prices while supporting the communities it serves.

CEO's Vision for the Future

John Ruddock, CEO of Cooplands, expressed his excitement about the new store. “We are delighted to be opening our new shop in Armthorpe,” he stated. “We want to bring the integrity of our business to this area, alongside a delicious range of savoury and sweet baked goods for our new local customers.”

Ruddock shared a personal connection to the area, noting, “My grandfather owned a bakery in Doncaster, so this is a particularly meaningful opening for me. We are looking forward to expanding further across Doncaster, welcoming new colleagues, and supporting the communities in which we trade.” This personal touch adds a heartfelt element to the company’s mission, highlighting the importance of community ties.

History of Cooplands Bakery

Cooplands Bakery has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1885 by Frederick and Alice Coopland in Scarborough. Today, it stands as the UK’s second-largest bakery business, with 155 shops spread across the North East, including Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, and employing about 1,600 colleagues. All Cooplands shops are supplied by two bakeries owned by the company, which produce a diverse range of baked goods, including many local specialities. The commitment to hand-finished products ensures that each item is crafted with care and attention to detail.

The opening of the new Cooplands Bakery in Armthorpe not only provides a new place for locals to enjoy tasty treats but also strengthens the community ties that the bakery aims to foster.
