Welcome to Yorkshire
Published on May 1st, 2026
•A significant change is underway at Jones Homes Yorkshire, as the company has appointed a new Head of Technical, Tom Dixon. This move is part of a broader strategy to embrace low-carbon technologies, which is becoming increasingly important in the construction industry. With over 20 years of experience, including six years as an engineering manager at Miller Homes, Dixon is well-equipped to lead this transition.
Tom Dixon's Role
In his new position, Tom Dixon will oversee several crucial initiatives aimed at making homes more environmentally friendly. One of his main responsibilities will be the rollout of air source heat pumps, a type of technology that uses the heat from the outside air to warm homes. This is a significant shift from traditional gas boilers, which contribute to carbon emissions.
Future Homes Standard
The introduction of the Future Homes Standard, recently outlined by the UK Government, aims to reduce carbon emissions from new homes in the drive towards a net-zero future. This new standard will require builders to adopt greener technologies, and Tom's expertise will be vital in ensuring that Jones Homes Yorkshire meets these new requirements.
Upcoming Developments
Jones Homes Yorkshire is already making strides in this direction. The company has recently completed its first development using air source heat pumps in Golcar, Huddersfield. Plans are also in place to secure permission for over 450 new homes across seven sites, with all of these homes being heated using the same low-carbon technology. This exciting development is set for 2026 and will include underfloor heating in larger detached homes, providing comfort while being environmentally responsible.
Engineering Challenges
Tom will not only focus on heating solutions but will also tackle various engineering challenges related to construction. These include:
Highways
Drainage systems
Infrastructure
External works
His role will be crucial in finding effective and innovative solutions to these challenges, ensuring that new developments are both functional and sustainable.
Tom's Vision
At 39 years old and living near Leeds, Tom Dixon has expressed enthusiasm for his new role. He stated, “At Jones Homes, we are ahead of the curve as the industry focuses on the changes needed to meet the requirements of the Future Homes Standard, which is designed to reduce carbon emissions in the drive towards net zero.”
He is excited about the impact he can have on the engineering, planning, and architecture of upcoming developments. Tom also noted the company's strong reputation for building high-quality homes with impressive finishes, saying, “Having the chance to work for the company and to be in an important role where I can influence the future success of the Yorkshire division is an incredible opportunity.”
Support from Leadership
David Ruffley, the Regional Director at Jones Homes Yorkshire, has spoken highly of Tom's appointment. He commented, “Continual changes in regulations bring new challenges in engineering, planning and architectural disciplines. Tom will help us transition these changes and ensure we can come up with effective design solutions while embracing the new Future Homes Standard.”
Ruffley emphasised the importance of Tom's role within the company, stating, “Tom’s appointment as Head of Technical is therefore an extremely significant one for the business. I’m delighted to welcome someone with his wealth of experience to the role.”
