Residents of York are in for a treat as the city gears up for the much-anticipated Summer Sparkle event on Thursday, 4 June 2026. This free community celebration is part of the York Festival of Ideas and promises to be an evening filled with music, creativity, and lots of fun.

Event Details

Summer Sparkle 2026 is taking place at the Hiscox Building in York city centre on Thursday 4 June from 5.30pm to 7pm. Tickets are free and available from https://yorkfestivalofideas.com/2026/calendar/summer-sparkle/

Summer Sparkle is aimed at younger neighbours aged 18 and over and older neighbours aged 65 and over - but York Cares is encouraging anyone over 18 to come along and join the celebration.

The event is being hosted by the local charity York Cares and Hiscox Insurance, which means it is backed by organisations committed to supporting the local community. This collaboration aims to foster connections among residents and encourage a sense of togetherness.

What to Expect

Those attending the Summer Sparkle can look forward to a variety of activities that cater to all ages. This year’s event will also feature hands-on craft activities led by York-based charity Dandelion Arts UK, alongside a fun photo wall complete with polaroid cameras and scenic summer backdrops. The event will feature:

  • Live music performances showcasing local talent

  • Creative workshops where participants can express their artistic side

  • Opportunities for conversation and networking with fellow residents

  • Fun activities for children and families

This mix of entertainment and engagement is designed to help build community spirit, allowing people from different backgrounds to come together and celebrate what makes York special.

Less Lonely

Leanne Evans from York Cares said:

“Evidence has shown that 36% of people in the UK feel lonelier since the pandemic. More than 50% want to feel more connected to their local community and 73% now recognise that a sense of community is important for wellbeing.

“Opportunities such as the Summer Sparkle provide a chance for neighbours in York to share time, laughter, and new experiences together. We aim to give local people a sense of belonging and improved wellbeing.

“Summer Sparkle is possible thanks to the amazing support of our partners and local York businesses. We're especially grateful to Hiscox for their continued support hosting the celebration, our dedicated volunteers, and the Woodroffe Benton Foundation, whose generous support has helped provide catering for the evening.”
