Welcome to Yorkshire

|Exciting news has emerged from Xscape Yorkshire, a popular recreational centre in the heart of West Yorkshire, as artist Nicolas Dixon has unveiled his latest mural, titled Castle in the Sky. This vibrant piece of art adds a splash of colour to the venue and continues the artistic journey started with his previous work, Everything in its Right Place, which was completed in 2025.
Nicolas Dixon's Artistic Journey
Nicolas Dixon, a talented artist based in Leeds, has made a name for himself with his unique style that combines vivid colours and biomorphic shapes. His previous mural, created after the removal of the centre's iconic ‘Cas-Vegas cactus’ lift in 2024, was a tribute to the local area and its heroes. The original mural featured representations of notable figures such as sculptor Henry Moore, footballer Viv Nicholson, and the Castleford Tigers rugby team, all brought to life through Dixon's bold artistic vision. Dixon expressed his excitement about returning to Xscape Yorkshire, saying, “Xscape Yorkshire is an incredibly vibrant destination, and the original mural was created to reflect that, so it’s great to have been asked to return to extend the design further.” This return has allowed him to further explore themes of local pride and heritage through his art.

Castle in the Sky
The newly completed mural, Castle in the Sky, is not just an extension of his previous work but an evolution that adds 17 new elements celebrating Wakefield's rich mining history and local sports figures. This includes a tribute to the late rugby league player Rob Burrow, who was born in Pontefract. Each new symbol in the mural carries its own hidden meaning, inviting visitors to discover the stories behind them:
“The 17 new symbols and icons are an evolution of the original artwork, each with their own hidden meaning waiting to be discovered – including some personal and sentimental touches which make Castle in the Sky all the more important to me.”
He also mentioned how conversations with local community members, including former miners, inspired significant parts of the mural, including the miners' winding wheel, ensuring that the artwork resonates deeply with the local heritage.
A Vibrant Community Space
Xscape Yorkshire has always been a hub of activity, offering a variety of attractions from indoor skiing at Snozone to climbing at Gravity. The addition of Dixon's Castle in the Sky mural enhances the venue's atmosphere, making it not just a place for activities but also a canvas for artistic expression that reflects the community's identity. Jason Warren, the Centre Director at Xscape Yorkshire, praised Dixon's work, stating, “We’re delighted to see Nicolas Dixon build on the success of Everything in its Right Place with this striking new extension to the mural. Castle in the Sky celebrates so much of what makes Wakefield and the wider Yorkshire region special, from its proud industrial heritage to its sporting icons, including a tribute to Rob Burrow, and gives guests another vibrant feature to discover during their visit to Xscape Yorkshire.”
